What to do if you have been attacked

1. The first thing you need to do is to alert and engage with cyber security professionalsThey have the expertise and experience neccessary to ensure you're needs are taken care of, rapidly. Our Incident Response Team is here to assist and make sure you do not miss anything important at this critical stage.

2. Depending on the situation, we strongly recommend that you protect your backups immediately. No backups should be on the network, so make sure you disconnect all networks.

3. Avoid touching anything. Although it might seem like the best thing to do, do not unplug or shut down things, as it can do more harm than good. Rather monitor the attackers by opting for real-time visibility.

4. Communicate with your stakeholders. We recommend you consult with cyber security experts before sharing news of the attack with your stakeholders, to ensure the right information, at the right time and to the right people.

5. Start working to minimize damages and impact of the cyberattack. Already at the point of discovering the threat actor(s) and/or the cyberattack, take a systematic approach to ensure future analyses and actions are based on as much intel as possible:

  • Describe how you identified the threats and / or cyberattacks in as much detail as possible
  • Do not waste time on the root cause of the attack, initially time is best spent dealing with the crisis
  • Assess the impact of the attack - which, and how much, data has been compromised?
  • Open a communication channel with management (e.g. Teams, Zoom or otherwise) to save time and avoid misunderstandings
  • Make sure all appropriate personnel are up-to-speed and aware of their roles and responsibilities - avoid micro-managing teams and let them work on the matter uninterrupted
  • Assign a central role to coordinate, control and communicate
  • Engage and cooperate with the audit team(s) as early as possible
