Combitech commissions a private 5G network at Holmen Iggesund

27 October 2022

Using knowledge provided by Combitech, Holmen Iggesund has installed a private 5G network for indoor and outdoor coverage. This solution creates the conditions needed for an efficient and sustainable production in a challenging radio environment, with large distances between the production areas and shipping ports. This makes the facility the most digitised board mill in the Nordic region.

This is an important step in our efforts to become a smart site, and i also completely in line with how we want to work together with our suppliers and other stakeholders in our value chain. We believe in shared learning where we can work together to create new knowledge and reach further.

Johan Nellbeck, CEO of Holmen Iggesund.

This is an exciting “smartification” step for Holmen Iggesund to create a connected board mill. We are proud to be able to make this journey together and we are looking to a close collaboration that will allow us to identify and implement the digital services made possible by the network going forward.

Jessica Öberg, CEO of Combitech.

A connected mill

The 5G network is being expanded in stages, with the first one already having been installed. As a result, the board mill has allowed for G5 coverage from the production facility all the way down to the shipping port in Skärnäs (around three kilometres away).

The full mill operations will be included gradually and connected to the network, in order to make use of the full power of digitalisation, such as through automated processes, connected sensors, handheld units, and automated transport.

Combitech is responsible for the entire, comprehensive solution, including everything from project management, radio network planning and frequencies, to operation and maintenance. The solution is based on hardware from Nokia, and Combitech has employed the company Vinnergi as its installation partner. Holmen Iggesund is using the cost-effective G5 frequencies for defined areas (local permits) that were recently made available by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS).

“We are pleased to have worked with Combitech to help Holmen Iggesund revolutionize operations using our 5G private wireless solution. With this deployment, teams can benefit from secure, low-latency transfer of data, keeping them informed at every stage of the product journey between the mill and the port, to optimize operations and reduce unnecessary steps.”, says Lise Karstensen, Head of Enterprise for Nordics, Nokia.
