Trusted to grow – Empowered to lead

3 July 2025

What was your first work experience like? For some, those early opportunities are more than just a glimpse into working life – they can mark the beginning of a long and rewarding journey. That was the case for Ted. From early hands-on experience at his dad’s workplace to Business Unit Manager at Combitech, his path has been shaped by trust and growth. Seven years and counting – this is Ted’s story.

A first introduction to Saab

We meet Ted in Arboga, Sweden, where he was born and raised. With Saab as one of the largest employers in the region, it didn’t take long before Ted was introduced early on:

- It probably started with my dad working at Saab – that’s where I got my first hands-on work experience. Later, I attended Saab’s technical upper secondary school here in Arboga, which gave me insight into a wide range of Saab’s operations and opened my eyes to the career paths available.

After five years of engineering studies, including a thesis at Saab and several summer job seasons, Ted was ready to put his knowledge into practice. Having already become familiar with Combitech during his summers, he chose to join the company as a Systems Engineer, working with radio communication at air force bases. The journey had just begun.

Seizing opportunities for growth

One of Teds main driving forces is his eagerness to grow. Throughout his seven years at Combitech, a pattern of seizing opportunities and embracing the unknown has come to define his career:

- I’ve always felt like there’s room to grow here if you’re willing to take the chance. That’s probably why these seven years have flown by, and it keeps me motivated. I focus on doing the best job I can in the moment, and by doing so I’ve been entrusted with new opportunities, backed by the support and trust of leadership and management.

After some time as a Systems Engineer, Ted was presented with the opportunity to step up as Project Manager for the operation. A step he gladly took! He held that position for about two years before being asked to take on a new challenge: the role as Business Unit Manager. True to his mindset of embracing the unknown, he accepted. Starting out as deputy, he has now served as the permanent head of the unit for the past three years.

Making a real difference

What keeps Ted inspired is not just the opportunity to grow but the chance to make a difference. Working closely with customers to solve complex challenges and contribute to long-term solutions adds depth to his everyday tasks:

- Knowing that what we do genuinely helps our customers succeed, and in turn supports something bigger, is incredibly rewarding. It’s a great feeling to contribute to society and to know that what we create is truly used and valued by the end user.

No week is the same as the last, and this variable work dynamic fits Ted’s adventurous spirit perfectly. This mindset clearly extends beyond work – from driving an RV across New Zealand to exploring new places and experiences whenever the opportunity arises. He also knows how to slow down and enjoy life when things are a little less fast-paced:

- In my free time I enjoy playing golf with my partner and spend as much time as I can on the lake. That’s relaxation in its purest form. Fishing, water sports, wake boarding… I love being out on the water. We’ve also just got a boat! Summer is my favorite season, 100%. I wish it lasted longer, haha.

When purpose becomes reality

Reflecting on his career so far, Ted notes how both his work and the global environment have shifted – and with them, his sense of purpose:

- In today’s uncertain geopolitical climate, it feels meaningful to contribute to society’s safety and resilience. That sense of purpose has only deepened over time. I’m especially proud of the team I lead and the expertise we bring to every challenge.

When stepping into his father’s workplace all those years ago, Ted didn’t know what the future held for him. Closing in on 10 years at Combitech may not have been on the radar from the beginning, but it’s something he does not regret today:

- My time at Combitech has really challenged me and led to many great opportunities. I didn’t think I would stay here for 7 years when I first started, but the chances for growth and to continually educate myself have brought true professional development. Today, I’m very happy I chose Combitech back in 2018.
